Site FAQs
Just some basic facts about this site and the person who maintains it. If you have any questions, hopefully they'll be answered here.
Who maintains Skycon?
Skycon was created by and is maintained by Sher. My email is sher_sites@yahoo.com if you need to contact me.
Why do you update so sporadically? Can't you update every week?
No, I can't. A lot of sites require you update every week (or twice a week) to affiliate with them, but apparently they all must be high school students or stay-at-home people who have time to do that. I just personally don't have time to do that. I work full time, I have a family, I have a social life, and I have a lot of other websites I maintain. I don't have time to update Skycon every single week like other people apparently have. I'm lucky if I have time to make icons once or twice a month. It's not that I don't care about this site, but I have to balance my time and my other sites. I think a few webmasters should probably take that into consideration that others can't update as often as they can... But, whatever.
Are all these icons yours?
No; just the majority of them. I accept submissions from others provided you follow the rules. You can submit icons here.
Why don't you have your icons on LJ like other people do?
Because they're here instead. Because I don't want to create another LJ account. Because I'm lazy? You pick.
How long have you been designing?
I don't have any idea. A few years...? I never kept track of it.
Who owns this domain? Can I be hosted on it?
Cherry-Skies.NET is owned by Sher and the server host is Dreamhost. I am not accepting anymore people for hosted sites on this domain, do not email me and ask. I will say no.
Can I be a staff member of Skycon?
No, sorry. I don't need any staff members for Skycon. It's not a large enough site to warrent additional help.
I have extra webspace you can use for your icons.
That's great, but Skycon will remain entirely on Cherry-Skies.NET. I don't plan to scatter it about on other people's space because that would 1) get confusing and 2) Skycon is my own project.
Some of your pages with lots of icons take forever to load! Can't you seperate them into smaller pages or something?
Sorry. I have a cable connection and it loads just fine (obviously), but I don't want to make layouts so simplistic (= boring) so they'll load on a dial up, and I don't want to make my more popular pages smaller for dial up, either. Cable and DSL are becoming more and more popular anyways, and I'm really sorry if you can't access the pages as quickly as cable or DSL users can. But that's what I use and it's really hard to accomedate everyone.
Can we affiliate or can I become a sibling?
See my affiliates page and the rules for affiliation. Siblings are invitation only.
Can I use your icons?
It's kind of weird that I get emails asking my permission to use icons. The reason I created this site was to share them with other people because I had so many icons on my hard drive and I needed to put them in one place to keep track of them. Anyways, yes, you can use any of the icons here so long as you credit the creator of the icon and don't claim the icon as your own, and as long as you don't hotlink to them.
How do you create your icons?
I usually start with a blank transparent square (100x100), and I like to use nice, crisp, clear, huge images that I can resize to how I want them without them looking grainy or ugly. I always create a layer for the border, but after that, I have no real plan. I use brushes, color mixers, contrasts, textures, gradiants, erasers, filters, blends and text to make an icon. I like to mess around and see what different effects do to an image.
